Building Rating Other Information
- Moxley Architects were chosen following the insistence of a design competition as the land was owned by British Rail. They were the winner of 21 entrants. Following the announcement of the winner in May 1985 British Rail then announced that the scheme wasn't tall enough and needed a tower leading to a second competition which Moxley Architects also won, and the design of the Belvedere.
- A planning application was filed in February 1986 so that it could be considered by the Greater London Council before its abolition in April 1986 which was predicted to lead to a local council hostile to the scheme as it was designed.
- The main contractor of the project, who oversaw the construction in a mere 30 months from start to finish, was Bovis, then owned by P&O. In turn 130 contractors and 1,800 people worked on the site, plus a further 250 design staff. Construction costs ran to a reputed £1 million a month, hence the rapid construction period to get the project finished as soon as possible. In the case of the Belvedere the towers concrete was constructed at the rate of three days per floor.
- The largest single contractor was Byrne Brothers who did one single concrete mix for the entire masterplan and ended up bagging £22 million for their work. At the time the firm's typical annual turnover was £4 million.
- Sitting under the project, and the rest of Chelsea Harbour, is an 1,800 space car park which at the time was the largest underground car park in Europe.
