Other Information

  • Archaeological excavations at Tabard Square revealed the site had been used during Roman times and amongst the finds were an ancient stone tablet dating from about 150 A.D mentioning a Roman trader called Tiberinius Celerianus who likely occupied an agora stall on the site. Also on the tablet is the oldest monumental inscription of the word "Londiniensium" yet found. Another find was ancient pottery containing cosmetics that still had the original fingerprints on it.
  • Originally proposed at 99m, Tabard Square was cut down in height to 82m during the consultation process for the planning application. Despite this, at the time of its completion in 2006 it was the tallest residential tower in Southwark, and the joint 5th tallest in London.
  • Providing illumination at night, the building features a giant barometer near its crown with a light that changes colour depending on the air pressure. Inside it are 36 LED ColorBlast 12 lights and 27 LED ColorCast 14 lights positioned to light it as evenly as possible.
  • Upon completion, the public space inside Tabard Square was the largest outdoor landscaped area to be built in Southwark for 30 years.
