The original church on this site was founded by St Bridget of Ireland in the 7th century.
The church was wrecked in the blitz and the rebuilding was paid for by the newspaper propieters on Fleet Street as they regarded it as their local church.
The Norman church on the site was built shortly after 1066 and even held the English Parliament in the 13th century. It burned down in the Great Fire of London.
This was the most expensive parish church built by Wren. The cost was such that the spire had to be added over 30 years after the original work had started.
The multi levelled tiers of the spire are said to be the inspiration for wedding cakes.
