Other Information

  • The Birmingham Wheel, located in Centenary Square is the largest portable ferris wheel in the world and was brand new before being constructed in Birmingham City Centre.
  • As was the case in 2003, the wheel was only granted planning permission to stand over the Christmas period. However, due to popular demand, planning permission has been extended by a year from Feb 2005 to 2006.
  • The success of the wheel is thought to have resulted in the cancellation of a similar but larger wheel planned for the cities Eastside Scheme. The worlds largest viewing wheel at 140m was proposed to be at the centre of the new city centre park in the Eastside, but developers felt that the popularity of this wheel had taken the novelty away from the proposed bigger wheel.
  • The wheel was removed in 2006 and has since been moved to Europe.
